The 9 Events of Instruction - Outline for a Lesson

Directions:   Come up with a lesson topic (pick something very simple and very small) and brainstorm some ways of fulfilling the 9 Events of Instruction.

Topic of lesson:          Writing a Summary of a Narrative

•  Gaining Attention

"What would it be like if you could snap your fingers and have any wish come true?"

•  Informing the Learner of the Lesson Objective

"Today we are going to watch a 3 minute video and you will have to summarize what happens in the story."    Present the rubric that will be used for grading the summaries.

•  Stimulating Recall of Prior Learning

Discuss   when   we read the story Jack and the Beanstalk and talk how the magic in that story relates to this story

•  Presenting Stimuli

Present the video The Magic Jeep

•  Guiding Learning

Ask students to pay attention to what happens when each character snaps his/her fingers in the story.

•  Eliciting Performance

After movie, ask students to write a one-paragraph summary of what happened in the story.

•  Providing Informative Feedback

Have student volunteers read their summaries in front of the class.   Have other students ask questions to the speakers why they included certain information and excluded other information in their summaries.

•  Assessing Performance

Review the rubric with the students and have them vote on a grade for each speaker.

•  Enhancing Retention and Transfer

In the lunch line afterwards, ask the students to request their favorite food and snap their fingers to see what happens.
